This tool displays fullscreen visual reference patterns while you change the monitor controls or operating-system display settings available on your device. It may help with settings-related brightness, contrast, black level, gamma or whole-screen color-balance problems, but it cannot measure color accuracy, create professional calibration or repair damaged display layers.

A whole-screen problem may come from settings. A fixed patch, line, pressure mark, retained image or localized tint is unlikely to be corrected through calibration.

What Visual Calibration Can Help With

Use this page when the issue changes the whole display and you can compare the result before and after changing a setting. If the symptom is local, physical or accuracy-critical, calibration is the wrong first move.

Calibration may help

The whole display looks too dark or bright, near-black detail is hidden, near-white detail is clipped, midtones look too dark or light, the entire screen looks consistently warm or cool, or an unsuitable picture mode or filter is active.

Calibration is the wrong repair

A fixed patch or line, pressure or liquid-related tint, fixed pixels, cloudy edge glow, retained images and measured photo, print or video accuracy all need a different path.

Diagnose broad tint or banding first

Use the Screen Color Test when you are not sure whether the problem is a whole-screen color issue, gradient banding or uniform-color behavior.

Before You Change Display Settings

Make the workflow reversible before changing any monitor or operating-system control.

  1. Select the display you intend to adjust

    On multi-display setups, confirm the browser window and operating-system display settings are targeting the same screen.

  2. Record the current settings

    Photograph or write down the current picture mode, brightness, contrast, color temperature, gamma and any RGB values you can see.

  3. Confirm the reset path

    Know how to restore the picture mode or factory defaults before changing individual controls.

  4. Change one control at a time

    If several controls move at once, you will not know which one improved or worsened the image.

  5. Let the display reach its normal operating state

    Use the screen as you normally would before judging a final result.

  6. Use consistent room lighting

    Avoid direct glare and avoid judging near-black detail in lighting you do not normally use.

  7. Use native resolution

    Non-native resolution and browser zoom can make sharpness and gradients look worse than they are.

  8. Start in SDR and a neutral mode

    Use SDR and a Standard or sRGB-style picture mode when available unless you are intentionally evaluating HDR.

  9. Temporarily disable color-changing features

    Turn off Night Light, Night Shift, True Tone, adaptive color or similar modes while judging neutral color, then decide whether to re-enable them later.

  10. Do not remove profiles blindly

    Avoid deleting or replacing an existing ICC profile on a professionally managed system unless you know why it is there.

Use the Patterns in This Order

This is the workflow map. The tool shows the visual patterns; the sections below explain the main interpretation rules.

  1. Black level and shadow detail

    Look for near-black steps. Adjust a black-level, range or brightness-related control only if available, and restore the previous value if blacks turn obviously gray.

  2. White clipping and contrast

    Look for near-white steps. Change contrast only when bright detail merges, and restore the previous value if the image becomes dull or dim.

  3. Gamma and midtones

    Use the midtone pattern as an approximate visual check. Stop if browser or OS behavior makes the result inconsistent.

  4. Grayscale and color temperature

    Check whether gray looks consistently warm, cool, red, green or blue. Try presets before individual RGB controls.

  5. Sharpness, gradients and normal content

    Look for halos, ringing and abrupt gradient transitions. Restore the previous value if the pattern improves but normal text or photos look worse.

  6. Before-and-after verification

    Compare the recorded settings with the new result, then keep the change only if normal content still looks better.

Adjust Black Level Without Crushing Shadow Detail

Black level is not the same thing as simply making the screen brighter. A display brightness or backlight control changes overall light output, while a black-level or range control can affect how near-black tones separate from true black.

On an external monitor, use on-screen display controls only if the monitor exposes them. On many laptops and phones, a dedicated black-level control may not exist, so the useful controls may be limited to brightness, display mode, profiles or accessibility settings.

Adjust White Level Without Clipping Highlights

Contrast that is set too high can merge near-white detail into a flat white field. Many displays are best left close to their default contrast setting, especially if lowering contrast makes the whole image look dull.

The goal is to preserve bright detail, not maximize white intensity. Do not use display brightness as a substitute for contrast when the problem is white clipping.

Check Gamma, Gray Balance and Sharpness

Gamma and midtones

Treat the gamma pattern as an approximate visual midtone check. The browser is not measuring exact gamma, and a pattern that appears near 2.2 is not a certified result.

Grayscale and color temperature

Check whether gray appears consistently red, green, blue, yellow or overly cool. Try neutral presets first. Change RGB gain only if your display exposes those controls and you recorded the defaults.

Sharpness

Look for halos, ringing or artificial outlines around fine lines and text. Stop when edges look clean without added outlines; maximum sharpness is usually not the goal.

Gradients

Use gradients to look for abrupt transitions after settings changes. Visual calibration cannot repair panel banding, limited bit depth or compression artifacts in source content.

Check the Result Before You Keep It

Do not keep a visually preferred result until it works outside the pattern screen.

  1. Compare before and after settings

    Use the photo or notes you made before calibration.

  2. View normal content

    Check photos, faces, text, shadows and bright scenes, not only synthetic patterns.

  3. Recheck black and white patterns

    Confirm shadow and highlight detail still hold after later adjustments.

  4. Use normal room lighting

    A result that only looks good in an unusual room setup may not be useful.

  5. Restore if it looks worse

    Go back to the recorded settings if the result looks unnatural or makes normal content harder to read.

  6. Save only after verification

    Save a monitor preset only after the result has been checked outside the patterns.

When to Use Windows, macOS or HDR Calibration Tools

Windows

Windows display settings include brightness, Night Light, color profile management and display color calibration where supported. For HDR-enabled external displays, Windows may hand calibration to the Windows HDR Calibration app.

macOS and Apple displays

macOS supports display color profiles and Display Calibrator Assistant where available. Supported Apple displays may also use True Tone, Night Shift, presets or reference modes that should be considered before judging neutral color.

HDR

Use the browser workflow in SDR unless you are intentionally evaluating HDR. HDR brightness, clipping and tone mapping should be handled with the operating system or manufacturer HDR tools.

Laptops

Built-in laptop displays may expose only brightness, profiles, adaptive brightness or OS calibration rather than full monitor controls. Do not expect every OSD-style step to exist.

Phones and tablets

Browser patterns can help compare display modes and adaptive features, but mobile controls are usually limited. A more vivid mode is a preference, not proof of better accuracy, and the browser cannot recalibrate panel hardware.

Visual Calibration vs Colorimeter Calibration

Browser-guided visual adjustment

Can reveal clipping, compare shadow and highlight detail, identify obvious whole-screen tint, guide available settings and show whether a settings change looks better. It cannot provide measured Delta E, verified white point, measured gamma, gamut coverage, luminance targets or a professionally generated display profile.

Measured calibration

Color-critical work generally uses a colorimeter or spectrophotometer, calibration or profiling software, an ICC color-management workflow and defined luminance, white-point and color-space targets. Most general users do not need that level of measurement.

Can a browser really calibrate a screen?

A browser can show visual patterns while you change monitor or operating-system settings. It cannot measure the panel, write hardware settings or create a professional display profile.

Do I need a colorimeter for accurate color?

Use a colorimeter or spectrophotometer with calibration or profiling software when photo, print, video or client work needs measured accuracy. Visual calibration is enough only for a better everyday baseline.

Should I turn off HDR, Night Light or True Tone first?

Use this browser workflow in SDR unless you are intentionally evaluating HDR. Turn off Night Light, Night Shift, True Tone, adaptive color and similar features while judging neutral color, then decide whether to re-enable them.

What picture mode should I start with?

Start with a neutral mode such as Standard or sRGB when available. Avoid vivid, cinema or heavily processed modes while making visual adjustments.

When should I use Windows or macOS calibration tools?

Use operating-system tools when you need profile-based calibration, display color settings or HDR calibration that the browser cannot apply. The browser patterns are a visual guide, not an OS profile editor.

Why can the patterns look different in another browser?

Browser and operating-system color management can affect how colors are rendered. Keep the same browser, display, color profile and viewing conditions when comparing before and after results.

Can calibration fix a localized tint or damaged area?

No. A fixed patch, pressure mark, line, liquid stain or localized tint usually points away from calibration. Use a diagnostic test or damage guide instead of changing global color settings.
