AppleCare+ is optional coverage for an iPad. It can add hardware service, technical support, and accidental-damage service, but it does not make every repair free or guarantee a particular outcome.

The useful question is not simply whether AppleCare+ is “good.” It is whether the plan changes the financial and practical risk of owning your specific iPad enough to justify its cost and service fees.

What AppleCare+ adds to an iPad

AppleCare+ sits alongside the standard warranty rather than replacing it. If you are comparing AppleCare+ with carrier protection, third-party coverage, or self-insuring, read the iPad insurance guide after reviewing Apple’s plan-specific details. Depending on the current plan and the device, it may provide:

  • Hardware service for covered defects
  • Battery service when the plan conditions are met
  • Accidental-damage service for qualifying events
  • Technical support from Apple
  • Service for eligible Apple-branded iPad input devices

Apple’s U.S. terms describe accidental damage as an unexpected and unintentional external event that affects the device’s functionality. The written plan controls whether a particular claim qualifies. AppleCare+ U.S. terms

AppleCare+ is different from the standard warranty

The standard warranty is mainly concerned with defects in materials and workmanship. A drop, liquid exposure, or other accidental event is a different question from a display or battery problem that appears without an accident.

AppleCare+ adds optional benefits for eligible situations. It does not remove the need to read the plan, pay applicable service fees, or follow Apple’s service process.

The Federal Trade Commission also distinguishes a manufacturer warranty from a separately purchased service contract. Which iPad problems may qualify for service?

Screen-only damage

Some newer iPad families have a separate screen-damage service fee. That does not mean every cracked display receives the same treatment. Additional damage to the enclosure or other components can move the claim into a different category.

Other accidental damage

A bent enclosure, liquid-related failure, or damage affecting more than the display may fall under the broader accidental-damage category. Apple assesses the device under the applicable plan terms.

Defects and battery service

AppleCare+ can provide hardware service for covered defects. Apple’s current U.S. terms also describe battery service when an integrated battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity, subject to the plan’s conditions.

Apple Pencil and Apple-branded iPad keyboard damage

Some AppleCare+ plans include eligible Apple-branded iPad input devices used with the covered iPad. The plan treats input-device service separately, so do not assume that damage to an iPad and damage to an Apple Pencil or keyboard are one free event.

Cosmetic wear

A scratch, dent, or mark that does not affect functionality may not receive the same treatment as functional accidental damage. Do not buy the plan expecting it to cover ordinary wear.

How current U.S. service fees are organized

Apple’s current U.S. fee schedule separates screen-only damage, other accidental damage, accessory damage, and theft or loss where the applicable plan includes that coverage.

Situation table
SituationWhat to verify
Screen-only damageWhether the exact iPad model qualifies for Apple’s screen-damage fee
Other accidental damageWhether the condition includes enclosure or component damage beyond the screen
Apple Pencil or Apple-branded keyboard damageWhether the input device is covered and whether it is treated as a separate service event
Theft or lossWhether the purchased plan variant includes theft or loss and what deductible applies

As of the current U.S. Apple fee page, qualifying newer iPad families have a $29 screen-damage fee and a $99 other-accidental-damage fee. Apple lists a different accidental-damage fee for other iPad models, a separate $29 accessory-damage fee, and a $129 theft-or-loss deductible where that coverage applies.

These figures are not a universal iPad repair price. They depend on the exact model, plan, claim type, and current Apple terms. Check Apple’s fee page before relying on any amount. Apple U.S. service fees and deductibles

AppleCare+ and AppleCare One are not the same decision

AppleCare+ is generally evaluated as coverage for one iPad. AppleCare One can group multiple Apple devices under one plan, subject to its own eligibility, pricing, and theft-or-loss terms.

Apple currently describes AppleCare One as including AppleCare+ benefits for multiple devices. That does not automatically make it cheaper or better for a household with one iPad. Compare:

  • The number of devices you would cover
  • The total recurring cost
  • Accidental-damage service fees
  • Theft-or-loss terms
  • Whether the plan includes the devices and accessories you actually use

Use the exact plan shown for your Apple Account and device rather than assuming that a general AppleCare One description applies to every iPad. AppleCare U.S. plan overview

When AppleCare+ may make sense

AppleCare+ deserves closer consideration when:

  • The iPad travels in a backpack every day
  • Children or several people use it
  • The iPad is used at school or in shared spaces
  • A large repair bill would be difficult to absorb
  • You bought a high-value iPad Pro or iPad Air
  • You expect to keep the device for several years
  • An Apple Pencil or keyboard would also be costly to replace
  • You prefer Apple-managed service over finding a repair option after damage

These are risk signals, not automatic reasons to buy the plan. The plan cost and applicable service fee still need to make sense for the device and ownership period.

When skipping it may be reasonable

Skipping AppleCare+ may be reasonable when:

  • The iPad stays at home on a desk
  • It is an older or lower-cost model
  • You already have overlapping coverage
  • You could comfortably pay for an unexpected repair
  • You mainly want protection from cosmetic scratches
  • The total plan cost is not attractive for the time you expect to keep the iPad

Do not compare only the monthly payment. Compare the total amount paid, the service fee if something happens, and the coverage you would actually use.

AppleCare+ does not replace a case or screen protector

Coverage and physical protection solve different problems.

A case can reduce exposure to drops, edge impacts, bag pressure, and damage to the back or corners. A screen protector can reduce surface scratches and change the way the display feels or looks. Neither one guarantees that an iPad will avoid damage.

Read the iPad case buying guide for case formats and carrying situations. The iPad screen protector guide covers surface protection, glare, clarity, and Pencil-related tradeoffs. If you are deciding whether one or both makes sense, use the iPad screen protector versus case guide.

What AppleCare+ does not mean

AppleCare+ does not mean:

  • Every repair will be free
  • Every cosmetic mark will be covered
  • A claim will always result in a new iPad
  • Theft or loss is included in every plan
  • Third-party accessories receive the same coverage as Apple-branded input devices
  • ScreenDetect can determine whether Apple will approve a claim
  • Your data will be recovered as part of hardware service

Apple’s current U.S. terms exclude categories such as normal wear, cosmetic damage that does not affect functionality, and situations not covered by the purchased plan. They also explain that service options and availability can vary. Read the current terms before making a coverage decision.

How to check eligibility before buying

On a compatible iPad, Apple’s U.S. support instructions direct you to:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select General
  3. Select AppleCare & Warranty
  4. Select the iPad
  5. Review the available plan, price, term, and service fees
  6. Save the plan confirmation and receipt

You can also use Apple’s coverage checker. Eligibility and purchase timing can vary, so use the option shown for the exact iPad rather than relying on a general enrollment window. Apple Support: get AppleCare coverage

What to do after accidental damage

If the iPad is damaged:

  • Stop using it if it is hot, swollen, leaking, or unsafe
  • Back up data if it still works
  • Photograph the condition
  • Record the model and serial information
  • Check AppleCare & Warranty
  • Save the plan confirmation and purchase record
  • Read the applicable service terms
  • Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider

Use document damage for warranty to organize evidence before contacting support. If the display or enclosure is physically damaged, the iPad pressure-damage guide may help you describe what you are seeing. For the repair-versus-replacement boundary, see can a broken display be repaired.

A ScreenDetect test can help you observe a symptom clearly. It cannot decide whether Apple will approve a claim or what service Apple will provide.

A practical AppleCare+ decision

Consider AppleCare+ more seriously when accidental damage would create a meaningful financial problem, the iPad travels or is shared heavily, or the device will remain important for several years.

Consider keeping the money available for repairs when the iPad is used carefully at home, the plan overlaps with coverage you already have, or the total cost does not fit the device’s current value.

Before you choose, verify the exact plan name, total cost, service fees, covered accessories, coverage duration, and current Apple terms. The best answer is the one that fits the way you actually use and carry the iPad.

Questions iPad owners usually ask

Is AppleCare+ worth it for an iPad?

It depends on the iPad’s value, how it is carried and shared, how long you will keep it, the plan cost, and the applicable service fee. It is more compelling when accidental damage would be difficult to pay for.

Does AppleCare+ cover a cracked iPad screen?

A cracked screen may qualify as accidental-damage service when the event and device meet the current plan terms. Screen-only fees may apply only to specified iPad models, and additional damage can change the service category.

Does AppleCare+ cover Apple Pencil damage?

Some AppleCare+ plans include an eligible Apple Pencil used with the covered iPad. Check the exact plan terms because input-device service is treated separately from iPad service.

Does AppleCare+ cover iPad battery replacement?

Apple’s current U.S. terms describe hardware service for an integrated battery that holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity, subject to the plan’s conditions.

What is the AppleCare+ deductible for an iPad?

The fee depends on the iPad model, the type of damage, and the plan. Apple’s current U.S. fee page lists separate categories for screen damage, other accidental damage, accessories, and theft or loss where applicable.

Can you add AppleCare+ after buying an iPad?

Eligibility and purchase timing can vary. Open Settings, select General, then AppleCare & Warranty, or use Apple’s coverage checker to see what is available for the exact iPad.
