Android Data Recovery: What Brings Deleted Messages, Photos and Files Back

Trash folders and backups recover most deleted Android data. Here are the current time windows per app, the steps for Google and Samsung apps, and what recovery apps can't do.

Where deleted Android data actually goes

Most deleted Android data comes back from a trash folder or a backup, not from a recovery app. Android has no single recycle bin. Each app keeps its own, so the first job is working out which app held the item.

Menus differ by brand and app version. The steps below were checked against Google and Samsung support pages on October 25, 2026, when Android 17 was the current version. Google's apps work on any Android phone that uses them. Samsung's Gallery, Messages and My Files apps exist only on Galaxy phones, and many Galaxy owners are still on One UI 8 while One UI 9 rolls out in stages.

Start with the app, then the brand:

  • Photos or videos in Google Photos: check Google Photos Trash first, on any phone.
  • Texts in Google Messages: check Messages Trash, then Archived.
  • Texts in Samsung Messages: check its Trash, which only works if the switch was on before the deletion.
  • Files: check Files by Google Trash, Google Drive Trash, or My Files Trash on a Galaxy.
  • Contacts saved to a Google account: check Google Contacts Trash.
  • WhatsApp chats: these have their own backup, covered below.

Before assuming something is gone, check places where items hide rather than disappear. Google Photos has Archive and a Locked Folder, and Google Messages has an Archived view. Archived texts can be moved back to the inbox.

One consequence of Google Photos backup catches people out: deleting a photo inside Google Photos with backup on also deletes the copy on your phone and on every other device with backup on. A removable memory card may still hold a copy.

How long each app keeps deleted items

Windows differ by app, and some pages disagree with each other. Where they conflict, this guide follows the app maker's own current page.

AppTime windowCaveat
Google Photos Trash30 daysSince September 2026, for backed-up and not-backed-up items alike. Older articles still say 60 days.
Google Messages Trash30 daysShows a days-remaining counter. Items deleted from Trash cannot be restored.
Samsung Messages Trash30 daysCan be turned off in Messages settings, so it only helps if left on.

Google Drive Trash30 daysTrashed files still count toward storage.
Google Contacts Trash30 daysOnly contacts saved to a Google account.

Many articles, and some Samsung pages, are out of date. Google Photos moved from 60 days to 30 for backed-up items in early September 2026; both of Google's current help pages now say 30 days. Samsung's US messages page also says texts deleted in Google Messages are permanently deleted, but Google's own page now documents a Messages Trash. Trust the app maker's page, and the counter on your own phone.

Recover deleted photos and files from Google apps

These apps work on any Android phone that has them installed.

Google Photos

  1. Open Google Photos.
  2. Tap Collections, then Trash.
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video.
  4. Tap Restore.

The item returns to your albums, your library and the phone's gallery app. It only works while the item is still in Trash. Permanently deleted items cannot be restored, and Google Takeout cannot bring them back either. Items not backed up are restorable only on Android 11 and up.

Files by Google

  1. Open Files by Google.
  2. Tap Menu, then Trash.
  3. Select the files.
  4. Tap Restore.

Trash is on Android R and later, and rolls out in phases. Anything removed through the Clean tab's Junk files card is permanently deleted and will not be in Trash.

Google Drive

  1. Open Drive in a browser at drive.google.com, or the Drive app.
  2. Open Trash.
  3. Select the file and restore it.

Only the file's owner can trash it. People you shared it with keep access until it is permanently deleted.

Google Contacts

  1. Open Google Contacts in a browser.
  2. Open Trash and restore the contact.
  3. If many contacts changed, use Undo changes, which covers the past 30 days.

Contacts removed from "Other contacts" do not show in Trash, and contacts stored only on the phone or SIM are not covered.

Recover deleted text messages on Android

Google Messages

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile picture or More, then Trash.
  3. Touch and hold the conversation.
  4. Tap Restore.

You have 30 days. You must restore the whole conversation before you can read individual messages in it. If the person texted you in the meantime, a new conversation starts in your Inbox and does not reopen the trashed one. Check Archived first, since archived texts are not deleted. Swipe-to-Trash needs a one-time setup in Messages settings under Swipe actions. Trash reached phones in stages from about April 2026, so deletions made before it arrived on your phone won't be there.

Samsung Messages

  1. Open Samsung Messages.
  2. Tap More options (three dots), then Trash.
  3. Touch and hold the message.
  4. Tap Restore.

This only works if Trash was left on before you deleted. It can be switched off in Messages settings. Samsung Messages steps apply only to phones that still have that app.

If neither Trash has the text, the remaining routes are a Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch backup made earlier, or a Google backup restored during setup, covered below. Without any of these, there is little a normal user can do, and the encryption section explains why.

Samsung's bins help only if they were turned on beforehand. For Gallery, US terms were not found, so look for a trash option inside the Gallery app on your phone and read the countdown it shows.

My Files: deleted items go to Trash for 30 days when you choose Delete, then Move to Trash. Restore from Trash through More options.

Samsung Cloud:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your Samsung account name, then Samsung Cloud.
  3. Tap Restore data.

For messages, go to Settings, Accounts and backup, Restore data under Samsung Cloud, pick the device, choose Messages and tap Restore. This only brings back data backed up before the deletion, and newer backups can overwrite older ones. Samsung Cloud has a 1 GB file size limit and is not available on some carriers.

Smart Switch: if you made a backup to a PC or Mac earlier, Smart Switch can restore messages to a phone. Messages cannot be viewed on the computer from the backup files, only after transfer to a phone.

OneDrive: Gallery sync with Microsoft OneDrive ended on September 30, 2026. Photos remain in OneDrive but no longer appear in Gallery. Check the OneDrive app directly.

Restoring a Google backup: what it can and cannot do

A Google backup covers apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS and MMS, plus RCS through Google Messages. Photos and videos depend on Google Photos. Not every app can back up all its data. To see what yours holds, go to Settings, Google services, Backup, then Backup details. Menu names vary by phone.

Restore rules matter most:

  • A backup restores during first-time setup or after a factory reset. It is not a way to pull back one deleted message without erasing the phone.
  • A backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored onto a lower one.
  • Backing up can take up to 24 hours.
  • If the device is not used for 57 days, backed-up data other than photos and videos is erased. Turning backup off also deletes it.
  • Pixel 9 and later can restore after setup through Settings, Accounts and backup, Android Switch, Start, but from only one previous device. For a different device, reset the phone first.

Samsung's guidance says Google Drive backup restores messages from Samsung Messages and Google Messages, again only at setup or after a reset.

WhatsApp backs up on its own, separately from Android's backup. Check Settings, Chats, Chat backup. You can choose WhatsApp cloud storage or a Google account, on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule. Restoring means reinstalling WhatsApp and verifying your number.

What Android recovery apps really do

ScreenDetect has no affiliate or paid relationship with any recovery tool, and this guide doesn't rank or recommend one. What follows comes from the tools' own pages and one outlet's test.

Most "recovery" apps work in one of three ways. Some read data that still exists on the phone through USB debugging and a companion app. Some scan for leftovers, which needs elevated access (root) on internal storage. A few scan SD cards.

  • DiskDigger says it does not require root but recovers more with it. On a non-rooted phone it is limited to images from thumbnail caches, so results are lower quality. A full scan needs root, and even then recovery is not certain because files can be overwritten. The free version recovers photos and videos only, and video recovery needs root. It also warns against saving recovered files to the same storage they came from.
  • SD cards are the realistic exception. A card used as ordinary removable storage can sometimes be scanned on a computer. A card set up as internal storage is different: Android formats and encrypts an adopted card "to only work with a single Android device at a time."
  • SlashGear, August 2024: one outlet found that Dr.Fone, Tenorshare UltData and DroidKit each found no deleted text messages, only existing ones, and iMyFone D-Back also failed. The tools needed USB debugging, installed a companion app and pushed a subscription. That is one outlet's test from 2024.

The truth about recovery "without backup"

Android devices launching with Android 10 or higher are required to use file-based encryption. Files are encrypted with different keys, and the storage holding your personal data is available only after you unlock the phone. Hardware protections stop an unauthorized operating system from getting the keys. A scan that reads leftover space therefore has much less to work with than on older phones. Phones upgraded from older Android versions may differ.

Rooting does not get around this. Unlocking the bootloader, the usual first step, makes the device perform a factory data reset to prevent unauthorized data access. The phone is erased before any scan can run. That is why a tool that pushes you to root is a warning sign.

Vendor claims next to their own fine print

Fake recovery apps and recovery scams

In 2023, Pradeo flagged an app called "File Recovery and Data Recovery", with over a million installs on Google Play, as spyware that quietly sent user data to servers in China. This is a historical case, and nothing here says the app is still available.

The FTC warns that tech support scammers ask for remote access and push payment by gift card, wire transfer, crypto or payment app. A paid "recovery" call or ad that works this way fits that pattern.

  • Install only from the official store and read the permissions the app asks for.
  • Be wary of tools that require rooting, since that erases the phone.
  • Check the subscription price before the scan, not after.
  • Never give remote access or pay with gift cards to anyone promising to recover data.

If the screen is broken, back up before anything else

For a Galaxy phone where the touchscreen fails but the display is visible, Samsung says to connect a USB mouse, and a keyboard if needed, through an adapter. Then back up with Smart Switch. If the display is blank, connect the phone to a TV or monitor through an HDMI adapter. Not all Samsung models support HDMI output. Other brands may differ. Back up first, then repair. The steps are in backing up a phone with a broken display, and repair vs replace helps with the next decision.

ScreenDetect offers its own paid, guided remote help from a US-based team, Backup & Transfer for phones. You operate the phone and enter your own passwords. Packages are $99 (up to 60 minutes) and $149 extended (up to 90 minutes). It helps protect and move data before a reset, repair or replacement. It does not recover deleted data, recover passwords, bypass security, or help phones that cannot power on or be unlocked.

Set up recovery before you need it

  • Turn on the Trash switch in Samsung Messages, so a deletion can be undone for 30 days.
  • Set up swipe-to-Trash in Google Messages settings if you use it.
  • Open Backup details to see what Google backs up, then use Back up now.
  • Turn on WhatsApp Chat backup and pick a schedule.
  • Use the phone, signed in to your Google account, at least once within 57 days, or the non-photo backup is erased.
  • Keep a second copy of anything important, such as a Smart Switch backup to a computer.
  • Remember that deleting a photo in Google Photos removes it from the phone too.

What this guide does not cover

This guide does not cover rooting, bypassing a lock screen or Google account lock, iPhone recovery, forensic extraction, or step-by-step recovery from a physically destroyed phone. For a damaged phone, see the broken-display backup page. For other Android topics, see the Android phone guides. If the phone is misbehaving rather than missing data, Device Troubleshooting for phones is ScreenDetect's own paid, guided remote help and is not data recovery.

Questions Android phone owners usually ask

How do I recover deleted messages on Android without a backup?

Check Google Messages Trash and Archived first, then Samsung Messages Trash if it was switched on before the deletion. If nothing is there, recovery apps rarely help: SlashGear's 2024 test, one outlet's result, found Dr.Fone, UltData and DroidKit located no deleted texts. Phones launched with Android 10 or later use file-based encryption, and restoring a Google backup requires erasing the phone.

How long does Google Photos keep deleted photos in the trash?

30 days. Google changed this from 60 days in September 2026, and both of its current help pages now say 30 days for backed-up and not-backed-up items. Once permanently deleted, photos cannot be restored.

Can DiskDigger recover photos without root?

Partly. DiskDigger says that on a non-rooted phone it is limited to images from thumbnail caches, so quality is lower. A full scan needs root, and recovery is still not certain. SD cards are scanned as a separate target.

Do Android data recovery apps actually work?

It depends on what was lost and where. Some read data that still exists or scan SD cards, but deleted internal-storage data on an encrypted phone is hard to reach. Vendors' own fine print says as much, and one outlet's 2024 test found no deleted texts. ScreenDetect has no affiliate relationship with any of these tools.

Does Samsung have a recycle bin?

Samsung Messages and My Files each have a Trash that holds items for 30 days, and the Messages switch can be turned off. For Gallery, US terms were not found, so check the trash option inside your own Gallery app. Paths: Messages, More options, Trash; My Files, Trash through More options.

Can I restore a Google backup to get back one deleted item?

Not normally. A backup restores during setup or after a factory reset, which erases current data. Pixel 9 and later can restore after setup from one previous device. Backed-up data other than photos is erased after 57 days of device inactivity.

Is it safe to install a recovery app?

Be careful. A 2023 Pradeo report flagged a recovery-named app with over a million installs as spyware. Tools may require USB debugging and push subscriptions. The FTC warns about anyone asking for remote access or payment by gift card or crypto. Use the official store and read permissions.

Does ScreenDetect offer data recovery?

No. ScreenDetect's paid, guided remote help can help protect and move data before a reset or repair, with you operating the phone. It does not recover deleted data, recover passwords or bypass security.
